Light Yagami
A serious student who ranked first in the National College Entrance Exams. He decides to change the world by using the Death Note dropped by the Shinigami Ryuk.

Ryuk
A Shinigami bored with the Shinigami Realm. He takes an interest in the human world and drops his Note there. He can only be seen and heard by someone who touches the Death Note.

L
A genius detective who has solved countless cases all over the world. He is the only person able to mobilize and control all of the worldԳ police. His true identity, appearance and whereabouts are not generally known.

Near
A boy genius who is a lot like L. He is the main force behind the SPK and can even manipulate the FBI. He challenges Kira head on and is relentless in his pursuit.

Mello
Reared as a possible successor to L. After L's death, Mello schemes to capture Kira himself. In order to beat Near, he will resort to any means, including joining forces with the Mafia.

Misa Amane
An eccentric young woman and teen model. She owns a second Death Note. In order to get close to Light, she goes to work as the second Kira.

Teru Mikami
Chosen by Light, he is the new proxy for Kira. He worships Kira as a god and faithfully executes every order he is given.

Kiyomi Takada
A popular female news announcer and Kira's spokeswoman. She is idolized by Kira worshippers. Kiyomi was Light's classmate in college, and they used to date.

Rem
A Shinigami who gave Misa a Death Note that originally belonged to a Shinigami who died after falling in love with a human. Unlike Ryuk who never takes sides, Rem definitely sides with Misa.

Sidoh
A Shinigami. Very personable and hard to dislike. Easily frightened, he gets nervous even among humans. It's hard to imagine that he could be a Shinigami.

Gelus
A Shinigami. He falls in love with Misa after watching her from his realm. Warm and kind, he gives up his own life to save hers.

Soichiro Yagami
Light's father and Detective Superintendent of the NPA. He later resigns and becomes Chief of the Task Force.

Tota Matsuda
A police detective who later becomes a member of the Task Force. Earnest and a bit immature, he looks up to Chief Yagami.

Shuichi Aizawa
A police detective who later becomes a member of the Task Force. Expressive and hot-tempered, he is often irritated by L's calm demeanor.

Kanzo Mogi
A police detective who later becomes a member of the Task Force. He is a big man of few words.

Sachiko Yagami
Light's mother. Extremely proud of her son.

Sayu Yagami
Light's younger sister. Often asks Light for help with her homework.


Aiber
A con man who operates throughout the world. Although a professional in the underworld, he often helps L conduct illegal investigations.

Wedy
A thief and expert at break-ins. Her skills are trusted by L.

Watari
The only person who is able to contact L.

Raye Penber
FBI agent. On L's order, the FBI investigates NPA personnel and their families. He tracks Light and is confronted by him during the hijacking of a bus.

Naomi Misora
Raye Penber's fiancee and former FBI agent. She becomes suspicious of the circumstances surrounding the bus hijacking that Raye was involved in.
